Basketball is a sport that showcases the “truth” because basketball demands a high level of skill. And basketball requires a combination of individual skills and game play.
To excel, athletes need a combo of gameplay and skill development. Playing on a team and training for basketball may seem similar but they are distinctively different. Let RBT shed some light on team practice vs skill development.
Team Practice
Team practice involves a collective effort to enhance overall team performance and cohesion. It centers around team execution and strategy, with the goal of achieving success and winning games. The time is used to develop specific plays and refine an athlete’s decision-making and game awareness.
Skill Development
Skill development focuses on the individual athlete and their development of their skills. It emphasizes honing fundamental skills necessary for success on the court. Skill development drills target specific aspects of the game, ball handling, finishing, shooting and footwork. Athletes work on perfecting their craft, with the ultimate objective of enhancing personal growth, which can ultimately contribute to the team’s overall success. Consistent skill building develops muscle memory. But one of the biggest differences is a RBT trainer can provide individualized feedback and a tailored approach to the individual athlete’s game. They’re correcting mistakes and offering guidance to improve skill execution.
It is all about balance for the athlete. There must be a healthy combo of game play and skill development to unleash their full potential, make valuable contributions to any offense they are a part of and attain their desired success.
To excel at a high level of performance, it is crucial to prioritize honing individual skills especially during the season.
